NovFeed: Science Meets Sustainability

NovFeed, a Tanzanian biotech startup founded in 2020 by microbiologist Diana Orembe (CEO) and environmental economist Otaigo Elisha (COO), is transforming food systems through science and sustainability. Using a proprietary microbial fermentation process, the company converts organic waste into protein-rich animal feed (around 70% protein) and nutrient-dense bio-fertilizers. Their scalable solution offers an eco-friendly alternative to fishmeal and soy, reducing environmental harm while supporting aquaculture and agriculture. As one of Africa’s emerging female-led science ventures, NovFeed is helping reimagine biotech innovation from the ground up.

Despite challenges like costly R&D tools and limited biotech talent, NovFeed’s impact is already clear. Smallholder fish farmers using their feed report higher survival rates, improved growth, and better incomes. At the same time, the startup is helping cut emissions, reduce ocean overfishing, and divert organic waste from landfills. With a modular production model designed for expansion, NovFeed is scaling across Africa to strengthen food security and promote circular, climate-resilient agriculture.

Their trailblazing work has earned global recognition. In 2023 alone, NovFeed won the $1 million Grand Prize in the Milken-Motsepe Prize in AgriTech, took home the Sustainable Harvesting Spotlight Award from the Auxilium Foundation, and was named Second Runner-up at the Ocean Impact Pitchfest. Previous accolades include first-runner up at the Ifakara Hackathon and a Sh10 million win at the Stanbic Entrepreneurship Challenge. As NovFeed scales its impact, it not only delivers economic and environmental value but also sets a powerful example for youth- and women-led innovation shaping Africa’s biotech future.
