Cameroonian Fintech Is Building Africa's Payment Rails

Led by CEO Dr. Nkwenti Azong-Wara, Maviance PLC is a Cameroonian digital financial-services company modernising how money moves across Central Africa. Its flagship platform, Smobilpay, connects banks, microfinance institutions, mobile-money operators, businesses and service providers through one digital ecosystem supporting bill payments, collections, bulk disbursements, e-commerce transactions, agent banking and cross-border payments.

Since launching in Cameroon in 2012, Maviance has built one of the CEMAC region’s most extensive payment networks, expanding access for consumers, small businesses and communities beyond traditional banking channels.

By 2023, the company reported more than CFA300 billion in total payment volume, 42,000 daily transactions, 150 connected banks and microfinance institutions, and coverage across 28 countries. Its network has also grown to more than 12,000 active Smobilpay agents in Cameroon—a vision initially set in motion by founder Jerry Cheambe.

A major milestone came in 2021, when Maviance secured a US$3 million investment from MFS Africa—now Onafriq—to expand Smobilpay’s footprint and support its regional ambitions. The platform was already serving more than 500,000 unique customers monthly at the time, reflecting its growing importance to Central Africa’s digital-payment infrastructure.

Maviance has since earned six Corporate Awards recognitions, including Most Innovative, Innovation and Adaptability, Employer of Choice, Investor in People and the 2025 Legacy Award.
