This Tech Startup Is Building AI For Africa's Languages

While most mainstream artificial-intelligence systems remain centred on widely spoken global languages, Botlhale AI is building technology around how Africans actually communicate.

The South African language-technology company was founded by CEO Thapelo Nthite, Chief Product Officer Sange Maxaku and Chief Technology Officer Xolisani Nkwentsha. Its tools allow businesses and digital platforms to understand, transcribe and respond to customers in African languages—addressing a market largely underserved by global technology companies.

Botlhale AI’s products include multilingual call-centre analytics, conversational assistants and speech-processing APIs that businesses can integrate into their existing systems. Its technology supports all 11 official South African languages, alongside Swahili and Kinyarwanda, enabling banks, call centres and other service providers to reach customers in languages they understand and trust.

By tailoring its models to specific languages, industries and operating environments, Botlhale helps organisations improve customer service, monitor compliance and extract insights from conversations that conventional English-focused systems frequently miss.

Beyond improving digital inclusion, Botlhale AI has created more than 1,000 micro-job opportunities through its language-data collection network and participated in programmes including the Grindstone Accelerator and NVIDIA Inception.

The company won Startup of the Year at the 2023 Africa Tech Festival Awards and secured R500,000 after winning Momentum’s Big Success Pitch in 2024. It was subsequently named Innovation City’s Startup of the Year in 2025, while Nthite joined the Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 class of 2026.
