Siwela Wines: Celebrating Africa's Wine Industry

Updated: 3 days ago

Siwela Wines is a premier South African wine company and one of the few black female-owned businesses in the industry. Founded in 2018 by Siwela Sweetness Masoga, a biotechnologist and winemaker, the company was born out of her passion for fermentation science, which she discovered while studying biotechnology at university. Siwela Wines specializes in crafting high-quality, accessible wines while offering immersive experiences such as wine tasting, wine blending, food and wine pairings, sip-and-paint sessions, and exclusive bubbly boat cruises.

What started as a modest production of 100 bottles has grown into an impressive operation, with over 80,000 bottles produced. The company now boasts a diverse portfolio of eleven wine varieties, catering to a wide range of palates. Beyond winemaking, Siwela Wines is committed to education and industry development through the Siwela Wine Academy, which offers courses, training, and masterclasses to equip aspiring professionals with knowledge of the wine and hospitality industry.

Siwela Wines has earned widespread recognition for its dedication to quality and excellence. In 2023, the brand won four Gold medals at the prestigious Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge and previously secured four Gold medals at the 2020 South African Women in Wine & Spirit Awards. Additionally, in 2022, Siwela Wines was named the top ‘Beverage’ brand at the Top 16 Youth-Owned Brands Awards, presented by Black Crown. With a vision to build a sustainable global brand, Siwela Wines continues to inspire new generations in South Africa’s wine industry, encouraging greater participation of black female entrepreneurs in the wine economy.
