Africa's Universal Superapp

Updated: 4 days ago

SafeBoda, co-founded in 2014 by Ricky Rapa Thomson, is a Ugandan ride-hailing and fintech company that began by revolutionizing the motorcycle taxi sector—locally known as boda boda. Recognizing the need for safer, more reliable urban transport, SafeBoda introduced a digital platform that connects passengers with trained, professional riders equipped with helmets, reflective jackets, and customer service training. This model not only improved road safety but also formalized one of Uganda’s most relied-upon forms of transportation

Since launching its super app in 2017, SafeBoda has expanded far beyond ride-hailing. The app has been downloaded over 1.5 million times and has handled millions of transactions, solidifying SafeBoda’s position as Uganda’s leading mobility platform. Today, the app includes services such as SafeCar (car-hailing), mobile payments, airtime purchases, and package deliveries—creating a full-service digital ecosystem. By integrating transportation with fintech, SafeBoda is promoting financial inclusion and offering convenient, tech-enabled solutions to everyday urban needs.

SafeBoda’s innovation and impact have garnered significant recognition across the continent. It was the first startup to benefit from Google’s Africa Investment Fund, a testament to its potential in Africa’s digital economy. The company has also been lauded for its role in enhancing road safety, empowering drivers through financial services and training, and contributing to Uganda’s broader digital transformation. As it continues to evolve, SafeBoda stands as a model for how African startups can build inclusive, scalable tech solutions rooted in local needs.
