Nigeria's Stock Market Just Became the World's Best-Performing Equity Market
Nigeria’s stock market has become the world’s best-performing equity market in dollar terms in 2026, delivering a remarkable 67% return and outperforming 91 other exchanges. The rally marks a dramatic turnaround for a market long weighed down by currency instability and foreign exchange shortages, with a stronger naira and renewed investor confidence helping attract capital back into Africa’s largest economy.

The resurgence has been fuelled by improving foreign exchange liquidity, higher oil prices, and growing confidence that Nigeria’s economic reforms are beginning to strengthen the country’s investment environment. Better access to dollars has eased one of the biggest concerns for foreign investors, while expectations that S&P Dow Jones Indices could restore Nigeria to frontier-market status have further boosted optimism by potentially opening the door to fresh global capital.
The scale of Nigeria’s rebound is highlighted by the fact that it has overtaken South Korea, whose artificial intelligence-driven stock rally has faded as the Kospi slipped into a technical bear market.
At home, attention is also turning to a potential listing of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, with plans to float around 10% of the company across multiple African exchanges. Such a listing would introduce one of the continent’s largest industrial assets to public markets and further deepen Nigeria’s capital market.
For investors, the rally illustrates how quickly frontier markets can reprice when macroeconomic reforms begin restoring confidence. While sustaining the gains will depend on continued policy progress and stronger corporate earnings, Nigeria’s performance suggests the country is increasingly being viewed not simply as Africa’s largest economy, but as one of its most compelling investment opportunities.
